Bloodstone is green jasper which is dotted with bright bright-red spots or nodules of iron oxide. These red spots which look like drops of blood increase all the way through its mass give this gemstone its name Bloodstone. It also derives its name Heliotrope from Greek words meaning sun and turning as in primeval times polished stones were described as reflecting the sun. The appearance of this gemstone may have reminded the ancients of the red setting sun mirrored in the ocean.
