    AGATE

    A non-transparent stone that comes in most colors. Often dyed to enhance its color. May chip or crack if handled roughly
    ALEXANDRITE A transparent stone that changes color in incadecent light. Usually changes from green to red. Heat (especially from remounting) can cause this stone to permenantly change color. Most alexandrites on the market are lab-created.
    AMBER is created from tree resin and is usually yellow. It is very soft and can easily be scratched. Some amber has inclusions of insects, bubbles, or pine needles.
    AMETHYST is a transparent purple stone. It can be cracked or chipped. Clean it in warm soapy water or an ultrasonic jewelry cleaner.
    AQUAMARINE is a transperant light blue or blue green color. It too can be cracked or chipped. Clean it in warm soapy water or a soft cloth.
    AVENTURINE usually looks like a speckled green stone (though it can be blue or orange).
    BLOODSTONE is mottled dark green and red. It can chip or crack but is fairly durable. Often Fancy Jasper is called Bloodstone.
    CARNELIAN is orange. It is relatively durable. Natural carnelian is bright orange; Man-made carnelian is a darker (close to red) orange.
    CHRYSOPRASE is a bright green stone. Chrysoprase will fade in sunlight.
    CITRINE is a transparent yellow stone that can be easily scratched. Leaving citrine in the sun (such as on the dashboard of a car) will often cause it to change color permanently.
    CORAL is white, pink, red, yellow or black. It is very fragile and heat sensitive.
    DIAMONDS is usually transparent and colorless though can have tints of yellow or pink. Colored diamonds are often treated. There are many fake diamonds out there. Diamonds are very hard and brittle. Though often thought of as unbreakable, they can be cracked or chipped.
    EMERALD is a green transparent stone. Clean it with a soft dry cloth.
    GARNET is usually a transparent dark red stone (though it can come in different colors). Garnet can be cracked or chipped.
    JADE is a green stone. It can be cracked or chipped.
    JASPER can be any color. Leopardskin jasper is brown, red or black and looks as if it has spots. Poppy Jasper is more red and brown. Fancy jasper is all colors. Jasper's polish will wash off with water.
    KUNZITE is a transparent lilac-pink. It can be scratched or chipped quite easily.
    LAPIS LAZULI is a speckled blue and gold stone. The gold is pryrite. It is often dyed. Do not wash Lapis in water.
    MALACHITE is a green stone with black rings. Do not wash Malachite.
    MOONSTONE is a translucent white, orange or gray stone. It is known for its shimmering. Protect your moonstone from scratches.
    OBSIDIAN is usually a black stone made from natural glass. Obsidian will crak from sharp blows.
    ONYX is black, brown, grey or white. Often it is lined with different colors.
    OPAL is a stone with specks of many colors. Do not heat opals.
    PEARL comes from shellfish. They are usually white though come in pink, peach, and black. Always put on your makeup BEFORE putting on your pearls.
    PERIDOT is a transparent lime green stone.
    QUARTZ is a colorless transparent stone. Quartz will crack easily if dropped.
    ROSE QUARTZ is a pretty pink stone. Very high quality Rose Quartz is transparent. Rose Quartz is often dyed.
    RUBY is a transparent red stone. Ruby us generally fairly durable though it can be chipped.
    SAPPHIRE is usually a transparent blue stone though can come in many colors.
    TANZANITE may be blue, purple or slate gray. Tanzanite may be easily chipped.
    TIGER EYE is aptly named as it has gold and brown stripes.
    TOPAZ is usually though of as blue or yellow. Yet, it comes in many other colors such as pink, brown, green and clear.
    TOURMALINE comes in many colors such as blue, yellow, pink, red, black, green and clear.
    TURQUOISE color ranges from sky blue to green. Turquoise is often sealed with acrylic resin.
    ZIRCON is a natural stone - not to be confused with Cubic Zirconia which is manmade.
